Eligibility criteria for teachers

When does a teacher qualify for the “Teach in USA” program:

(1)Situation A: Meets the qualifications for teaching in schools in his or her home country; is working as a teacher at the time of application;

and has at least two years of full-time teaching experience;

OR

Situation B: Has at least two years of full-time teaching experience within the past eight years; within 12 months of his or her application

submission date for the program, has or will have completed an advanced degree in education or in an academic subject matter that he or she intends to teach

  1. Has a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in either education or the academic subject field in which he or she intends to teach
  1. Satisfies the teaching eligibility standards of the U.S. state
  1. Good reputation and character (reference letters)
  1. Sufficient English language knowledge to function in U.S. classrooms and to function on a day-to-day basis
  1. (desired) Master’s degree, prior IB (international baccalaureate) experience, international experience, 5 years of teaching experience, HRC attitude

Possible grade levels

Primary school Elementary school Middle school High school

It depends on the level that the teacher is currently working in his/her home country, on which level they can work in the USA as a teacher. A general rule is that they are not allowed to teach in a higher level grade in the US then what they have taught in their home country. They can only teach a lower level grade or the same level grade.

Teacher profiles that HRC is looking for

  1. Bachelor/Master in Education
  2. Bachelor/Master in either one of the following subjects:

    • Spanish
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Biology
    • Arabic

At this time, teachers only with above mentioned backgrounds will be considered.

Required documents

  1. Previous USA entry if J-1, Work & Travel, F-1, M-1, H, or Q-1

Please upload the following documents: copy of visa and/or entry + exit stamps, I-94 and DS-2019 (depending on the type of visa)

  1. Perform security checks as required by the state department of education and host school. The Teacher can obtain this document from their National Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice, or similar entity in their home country. (uploaded copies of a police certification)
  1. Diploma, degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree in either education or the academic field in which he/she intends to teach – needs to be in English (if not in English, an official translation is required)
  1. Transcript of Records of degree - needs to be in English (if not in English, an official translation is required)
  1. 1 Reference letter from current school proving that the applicant is currently working as a teacher in his/her home country (if Reference letter from current school shows less than 2 years’ experience, then additional reference letters from previous schools proving at least 2 years of full-time teaching experience) - needs to be in English (if not in English, an official translation is required)
  1. Health Background check (see the template in attachment)
  1. 1 Reference letter from a colleague attesting to that teacher's good reputation, character and teaching skills - needs to be in English (if not in English, an official translation is required)
  1. 1 Reference letter from a former supervisor attesting to that teacher's good reputation, character and teaching skills - needs to be in English (if not in English, an official translation is required)
  1. Education Evaluation Form (to be applied for by the teacher)
  1. State Licensing form

Work process

  1. Please send resume of teacher to HRC → if HRC gives a GO: on to step 2
  1. Upload resume of teacher on VMP and also include documents 1-7 on the VMP
  1. HRC checks, you receive feedback from HRC if the teacher is eligible document-wise
  1. If teacher is eligible, HRC will contact the partner to set up an Introduction call with the teacher.
  1. Introduction call went well → teacher needs to gather reference letters of point 8-9 and also applies for the Education Evaluation Form (10). These three documents need to be completed to move forward to the first extensive interview with HRC. Upon receipt of these documents, HRC concludes if the teacher is selected for Teach in the USA program.
  1. HRC will keep teacher and partner involved about vacancy’s and an offer will be send directly to the teacher and partner will be in CC.
  1. First extensive interview with teacher and HRC
  1. First Extensive went well → on to next step:
  1. Second extensive call with teacher and HRC
  1. Second extensive went well → GO: teacher will be presented host school
  1. Interview process with host school
  1. Teacher gets hired for host school → start of visa application and payment of 1300$ for visa stepsto HRC
  1. Once the teacher is in the USA, they have to apply for a state licensing form.

Attachment 2: VMP Checklist

Please go through this checklist before you upload a teacher on the VMP portal. All points that are highlighted in yellow are necessary before HRC conducts a first introduction call with the teacher.

  • Passport
    • Make sure that the passport is still valid for at least the entire program from the moment that they start plus 6 months after the end date of their program!
    • If their passport expires before this date you can continue the application but please make sure you upload a document proving that the request for extension has been turned in at the local authorities.
  • All 3 references letters. School reference letter MUST include letterhead, start and end date of employment, duties and be signed and stamped. The letter should be in ENGLISH (if necessary an official translation) and the dates must match the HRC CV. Following reference letters need to be in the files:
  • Reference letter from school from Head of school ( at least 2 years of teaching in front of a class)
  • Reference letter from a colleague
  • Reference letter from a supervisor
  • Diploma in English, if not in English please certified translation
  • Transcripts of Records for all years of education in English, if not in English please certified translation
  • Foreign Education Evaluation
  • Security Check (Statement of Good Behavior by local Police or Government authorities)
  • Health Background Document
  • Signed offer letter, signed on all pages AND make sure the amounts are clearly mentioned

  • Check for misspellings or mistakes
  • Verify that each duties for the same position isn’t duplicating description for every employer
  • Review CV for irrelevant details
  • Example: If someone took a First Aid Course put it under ‘other skills’ and not under the ‘education’section.
  • Verify that the education listed is only post-secondary education;
  • Review and verify your interview notes make sure the two are consistent.
